Background/History: 1
Personality:

Meeting Morrigan makes it immediately apparent how bizarre she is compared to the rest of Thedas. A girl donning strange, revealing clothes who lives in the forest, in comparison to the restrained folk that inhabit the rest of Denerim, certainly serves as a shocker to the Grey Warden and company. Whats-more, she speaks in an almost melodic tone, using archaic words such as 'twas' and 'tis'.

It's easy to see why Alistair quickly jumps to the conclusion that she is a fabled 'Witch of the Wilds', an apostate, or illegal mage, that supposedly kidnaps children and preys upon them. And, to be honest, Alistair is not too far off the mark. Morrigan is an apostate mage, and her mother, Flemeth, is the supposed 'Witch of the Wilds' of legend. Morrigan is a rare breed in many ways; from her unorthodox views on magic, to her atheistic comments about the Maker, to her morbid tendency to find joy in chaos and carnage.

Morrigan is a sullen sort, difficult to read and wildly unpredictable; much of this can be attributed to her strange upbringing, living in the woods as a rogue mage far from society. In fact, Morrigan often notes that human customs tend to perplex her, like the copious amount of 'touching' in regards to handshakes. Her lack of physical contact growing up also has led her to take an unnaturally cynical view on society. She will often point out humanity's shortcomings, such as their blind faith in a Maker that has 'forsaken them twice', and is no stranger to manipulating men because she knows they immediately think she is 'weak' and 'thinks they are attractive' because she is a woman.

Coupled with this is the inability to comprehend interpersonal relationships. When the Warden shows interest in her, as well as genuine concern, she is unsure how to react to such kindness. Her mother was always quite cold, and she never had much by way of friends (besides forest animals, she claims), so the notion of friendship is an odd one to her. In this way, you could say that Morrigan is an innocent creature, unbeknownst to the marvels of human interaction.

It's obvious that Morrigan's viewpoint on many issues is influenced and shaped by the environment she was raised in. 'Nature is, by its nature, chaotic', she notes. Because of this, she adopts a Darwinistic view on even human affairs, nothing that 'power' and 'survival' are what matter, and other, fickle things quickly fade. 'Love' and 'beauty' are pointless things, that, in the end, only serve as weaknesses. The strong survive, and the weak die, and she is perfectly content with that.

Despite this, Morrigan does have her rare moments where she shows weakness. She details a story from her childhood, when she first forayed into a human village, and notes how she was enthralled by a woman and her carriage. It 'must have been what true wealth and beauty was', she claims. Stealing a hand mirror, she scurries back to her hut, where her mother was furious. She breaks the mirror and tells her to never again bother with frivolous baubles like it again. Morrigan was, naturally, heartbroken, but she tells the Warden that it made her stronger. That she was foolish for taking interest in the mirror.
